Batavia, Ohio. Clermont Senior Services is actively recruiting for their Adopt-a-Senior holiday project! Each year they receive calls from individuals and organizations wanting to help the elderly during the holidays by donating a gift to brighten someone’s day. Linda Eppler, The Clermont Senior Services Director of Community Services stated, “This project has grown enormously in the last few years! Even when the economic forecast looked pretty bleak, the response was amazing. It seems that a lot of people really have a heart for seniors at Christmas.”
This year, they have received nearly 500 wish lists from local senior citizens in need. Half have already been adopted, but they have a long way to go. The wish lists usually consist of practical items, as well as, small luxury requests like a box of candy or a crossword puzzle book. Gifts are delivered by staff in order to keep the contact information of each senior citizen protected and private.
For some seniors on the list, these donations will be the only gifts they receive. Eppler explains, “Some of them are overwhelmed by the generosity of our volunteers. Some laugh and some cry, but they all have big smiles on their faces, and a warm spot in their hearts from knowing that someone cared.”
There is a large need for personal care items such as shampoo, body lotion, razors and shaving cream. Cleaning supplies are always needed too. There is also always a need for towels and sheets, bed and bath linens are too costly for most seniors to replace. One senior reporting that she had to wash her dishes with shampoo because that was all she had. These items can be donated to the Clermont County Senior Services gift pantry without adopting a specific person and collecting these items can be a great group project!
