Frying the Turkey This Thanksgiving? Recycle the Oil!

Dennis Shiveley with Clermont County’s Fleet Maintenance Department, pours used cooking oil into a device that will recycle the oil into heat to keep the maintenance garage warm

Immediate Release
November 16, 2010

Batavia, Ohio.  “Pouring the oil from your deep-fried turkey down the drain can harm wildlife and wreak havoc on local sewage systems,” said Clermont Office of Environmental Quality Director Paul Braasch.  “One suggestion I have is to put the used oil into a container and take it to the Clermont County Fleet Maintenance garage where it can be recycled.”  Workers at the Clermont County Fleet Maintenance garage welcome you to drop off most types of used oil at their building, located at 4005 Filager Road in Batavia; the recycled oil will keep the garage warm this winter!

“We recycle motor, cooking, diesel, and fuel oil here,” said Dennis Shiveley with Fleet.  “The used oil is recycled to fuel three furnaces that keep the county vehicle maintenance facility toasty and saves around $5,000 in heating costs each year.”  Each of the furnaces holds 250 gallons of the recycled product, obtained from homeowners and oil changes done at the county garage.

“We have two 1,000 gallon tanks to store used oil that we stockpile over the warmer months,” said Shiveley, who said the county first began the oil recycling program seven years ago.  “It has steadily been gaining in popularity.”  He said that when transporting used oil to Fleet, make sure it is stored in a container that will not leak - many people use milk jugs with a secure cap.

Need more reason to recycle that used oil?  The American Petroleum Institute reports that if you recycle just two gallons of used oil, it can generate enough electricity to run the average household for almost 24 hours.  “Help the environment and keep us warm this winter,” said Shiveley.

Clermont County citizens are invited to drop-off used oil for recycling Monday through Friday, between 6:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at the Fleet Maintenance garage, located at 4005 Filager Road in Batavia.  Call (513) 732-7775 for more information about the oil recycling program.
