Immediate Release
September 11, 2009
Batavia, Ohio. The Board of Clermont County Commissioners has proclaimed Friday, September 11, 2009 as Patriot Day in Clermont County, marking the eighth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America. Citizens are encouraged to fly their American flags at half-mast on this day to remember the nearly 3,000 people who died and the many others who were injured on that day during attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. Many citizens will also pause for a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane flew into the World Trade Center.
The proclamation encourages us to also remember the thousands of families who lost loved ones on September 11, 2001. It calls on us to recognize the courage of the firefighters, police officers, and other emergency responders who showed the true meaning of heroism during the rescue efforts.
“Today we see the virtue of the September 11 heroes in our military personnel,” reads the proclamation. “We are grateful to all of these men and woman and to their families, for the sacrifices they have made and for their service. We honor those who have lost their lives defending our freedom.”
On September 11, 2001, four planes were hijacked. The hijackers deliberately flew three of the planes into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon; a fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. It was the largest act of terrorism ever on American soil.
