Batavia, Ohio. “Clermont County has paid a high price during this war on terrorism; nine young men have made the ultimate sacrifice and have died on foreign soil,” said State Representative Colonel Danny Bubp at the Salute to our Veterans, Troops, and their Families at the Clermont County Fairgrounds on Thursday, July 30, 2009. “I want to commend the Clermont Commissioners for not forgetting about these troops and their families by honoring them during their meetings.”
“Too often our veterans don’t get the recognition they deserve,” said event organizer Clermont Commissioner Bob Proud. “We in Clermont County will not forget the sacrifices they and their families have made.” He encouraged the large crowd in attendance to make sure they thank veterans and enlisted men and women for their service.
Kim Pellington with the Whole in My Heart support group talked about how important it is for troops and their families to know that they are not forgotten. “The families appreciate it when you line the streets, wave the flag, and make yellow ribbons to remember their loved ones who have died in combat,” she said. “The families and troops appreciate the care packages, and when you say thanks for your service to our country.”
Among the highlights of the Salute was the arrival of four skydivers with red, white, and blue streamers, carrying a large American flag. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Joe Whitt (World War II veteran), Ralph Shepherd (Korean War veteran), Jack Haigwood (Vietnam War veteran), Mark Coyle (Desert Storm veteran), Jeff Fiely (global war on terrorism), and members of the Whole in My Heart military family support group.
