New Clermont Trail Provides Recreational and Economic Development Opportunities
Immediate Release
June 19, 2009
Batavia, Ohio.
“It’s been quite awhile in coming,” said a smiling Williamsburg Mayor Mary Ann Lefker, watching the first walkers and bike riders enjoy phase one of the
Williamsburg to Batavia Hike-Bike Trail
.
During a ribbon cutting ceremony for the trail on Friday, June 19, 2009, State Senator Tom Niehaus (R-14) praised Lefker and Clermont Recorder Debbie Clepper for their efforts over the past nine years to turn their vision for the trail into reality.
“This is a wonderful example of local, state, and federal partnerships working collectively to provide citizens with a return on tax dollars that we can all enjoy,” said Senator Niehaus.
The state provided over $415,000 in community project funds for the trail, federal highway funds contributed $218,000, and there were numerous local donors.
The first 2 ½ mile phase of the trail runs from Broadway Street in Williamsburg, along Williamsburg-Bantam Road, crossing over Cain Run Creek, and ending at an overlook area along Harsha Lake.
“This trail provides the community with a wonderful recreational opportunity that will enable citizens to park their cars and ride or walk in a beautiful, safe environment,” said Clermont Commission President Ed Humphrey.
“Some portions of the trail are old roads that were abandoned during the construction of Harsha Lake,” said Clepper.
“So many people have worked so hard for this trail to open; this is a very exciting day.”
Mayor Lefker expects phase two of the trail to begin in 2010 with completion in 2011.
“This will extend the project to the campground at East Fork State Park,” she said.
“When it’s complete, the trail will encompass 15 miles linking Williamsburg and Batavia.
I am optimistic that in addition to recreational opportunities, the trail will provide economic development opportunities for businesses along the site.”
Parking for the trail is available in Williamsburg at Harmony Hill Museum (Third and Lytle Street), at the Community Park, and at the old high school (Broadway and Main).
