Batavia, Ohio. Over 2,000 volunteers are needed to help Mother Nature with a little spring cleaning in Clermont County. The East Fork Little Miami River Sweep and Clermont Clean and Green Collaborative are joining forces to coordinate the event, set for Saturday, April 28, from 9 a.m. until noon at 18 locations across the county. “We’re combining the events to increase participation and broaden the scope of the clean-up efforts,” said Becky McClatchey with the East Fork Watershed Collaborative.
“This is the first year the Valley View Foundation has been involved with running the Clean and Green program,” said Valley View Executive Director Vanessa Hannah. The non-profit organization has preserved and manages 150 acres of open space along the East Fork of the Little Miami River in Milford. “We are excited about the event because it gives us an opportunity to contribute not only in our immediate community, but throughout the county,” she said.
The Melink Corporation in Union Township is among local businesses taking part. “We have around 10 employees that have already volunteered to help clean-up the stream bank areas around the Melink property,” said Melink Facilities Engineer Philip Yockey. Milford schools will also be assisting with the clean-up there. “This goes hand-in-hand with our corporate message of sustainability.”
McClatchey said the annual clean-up is supported by grants from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, with assistance from the Clermont Convention and Visitors Bureau, Clermont Water Resources, Little Miami, Inc., Buckeye United Fly Fishers, Kroger, GSM-Global Scrap Management, Cornerstone Marketing, The Clermont Sun, and Loveland Canoe and Kayak. Volunteers will be provided with gloves, trash bags, a free picnic lunch, and a thank you gift. All volunteers must sign a waiver form available on the website www.ClermontSWCD.org; you can also register to participate in the River Sweep at that website or call 732-7075.
