Batavia, Ohio. The Kentucky Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association (HBPA) has presented the Clermont County Humane Society with a $500 check to help care for the malnourished animals taken from a Bethel farm on December 28, 2009. Six of the animals taken were thoroughbred horses. “We are amazed at how many of our horse people stepped forward to contribute whatever they could to help these animals,” said David England, a member of the board of directors of the HBPA, an organization representing horsemen’s interests. “This past weekend, Turfway Park sent two trucks full of food, bedding and blankets for the animals and many of the jockeys are donating their mount fees for racing this past Saturday. Not one person we talked to hesitated to help.”
“I am taken with how these individuals who don’t even live in our community have contributed so much,” said Clermont Animal Shelter Director Kim Naegel. “Their generosity and compassion is amazing.” “There are so many good things going on by horsemen everywhere,” added England, who bristles at the thought of horses being neglected. Charges are pending in the local case against the man who allegedly trained horses locally.
Donations are still needed to care for the animals, including:
8 – 32 gallon trashcans with wheels
1 – 150 gallon trough
Grass hay
Alfalfa cubes
Beet Pulp Shreds
Equine Senior Purina
Fat supplements (weight builder)
Flax seed oil
Corn oil
Iodine shampoo (or any other anti-bacterial shampoo)
Alfalfa hay
2 heaters for galvanized water tubs
Bagged bedding or bailed bedding
Heated buckets
Rubber stall mats
12-inch sections of chain with snaps on both ends

1 – 50 gallon trough
Donations are being accepted at the Clermont County Animal Shelter, located at 4025 Filager Road in Batavia, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Donations after hours can be left at the building behind the shelter. An account has also been set-up to accept cash donations at Bethel Feed and Supply, located at 528 W. Plane Street in Bethel.
