Amnesty Available for Some In Clermont County
Batavia, Ohio. Clermont County's Division of Child Support Enforcement will be offering amnesty to select parents
who are behind on making child support payments.
From August 13, 2001 until September 14, 2001, parents who owe past-due support payments can contact the county
agency and arrange for proper payment on their accounts. Child Support will suspend or withdraw legal action
pending on civil cases, and criminal cases not yet referred to the Prosecutor's office, for those parents who make
satisfactory arrangements to make payments toward their child support. Parents who make a significant payment
toward the arrearage, and/or who contact Child Support Enforcement with employment information from which a
wage assignment can be completed, will be considered for the amnesty offer. In those criminal cases in which formal
charges have been filed and that person has been indicted, amnesty will not be offered.
Clermont County Child Support Enforcement has taken an aggressive position against those child support offenders
who have failed to meet their obligations toward their children. Since January of 2001, the criminal non-support
process has been initiated in nearly 200 cases. Those cases have been referred to the Prosecutors's Office for possible
felony charges. That number is nearly four times the amount of criminal cases normally filed by Clermont County, in
any one year.
"The amnesty program is being initiated in connection with Ohio's observance of Child Support Month," says Gaylyne
Ayres, Deputy Director of Clermont County Department of Job & Family Services, Child Support Enforcement. "It
gives parents who are delinquent in meeting their obligations an opportunity to take steps to resolve the problem
before the situation escalates to the level of criminal charges. Securing support for Clermont County's children
remains our top priority. It is the hope of the members of the staff of Child Support Enforcement that the amnesty
program will result in additional funds for families in our community."
