Veterans Unfurl Giant Flag at Thursday Military Salute
Batavia, Ohio. A giant flag will be unfurled by a group of active duty military personnel and veterans, as part of the Salute to Veterans and Our Troops that will be held at the Clermont County Fair on Thursday, July 24, 2008 at the county fairgrounds in Owensville. The Salute begins at 6:30 p.m. at the grandstand and is being organized by Clermont County Commissioner Bob Proud, the Clermont Veterans' Services Commission, and the Clermont County Fair Board.
"This is a great opportunity for the community to come out and show their support for our troops stationed abroad," said Commissioner Proud. "It is also an opportunity to show gratitude to our veterans who have fought for our freedom, and to remember those who paid the ultimate price."
Army Captain Mike Torok and Army Staff Sergeant Ryan Thrift, who have served in the Iraqi conflict, and "Ace" Gilbert, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, will be the featured speakers. The Pledge of Allegiance will be led by the Whole in My Heart military support group that meets monthly at the Union Township Civic Center. Special recognition will be given to veterans/active duty personnel and Gold Star families (those who have lost loved ones in a military conflict).
On Veteran's Day at the Clermont County Fair, July 24, veterans with military identification or other proof of service will be admitted free. Current members of the Armed Forces, who are in uniform or who have military identification, will be admitted free to the fair all week. The fairgrounds are located at 1000 Locust Street in Owensville.
